2365 or 2366? Which Level 3 electrical course is right for you

The difference between City & Guilds 2365-03 and 2366-03, who each is for, how they're assessed, and what comes next.

If you're looking at Level 3 electrical courses, you'll see two codes: 2365-03 and 2366-03. Here's the short answer: the 2366-03 is City & Guilds' replacement for the 2365-03. If you're starting Level 3 now, you'll most likely be on the 2366. If you're already part-way through the 2365, carry on and finish it.

What's actually changed?

The core skills are the same: science, testing, fault finding and design. The 2366 adds two things worth noticing:

  • Organising and overseeing work: planning jobs, managing resources and supervising safely on site.
  • BS 7671 as its own unit: learning to find your way around the wiring regulations and apply them, not just quote them.

Does either make me a qualified electrician?

No, not on its own. Both are technical (classroom and workshop) qualifications. To become a fully qualified electrician and get your ECS gold card, you also need:

  1. A work-based Level 3 NVQ, proving your competence on real jobs.
  2. The AM2 practical assessment.

Most people also take the 18th Edition (BS 7671) qualification, which neither diploma includes.

Which should I choose?

  • Starting fresh: go for the 2366. It's the current qualification.
  • Already on the 2365: finish it. It's still recognised.
  • Changing career: check the centre's entry requirements, especially age and Level 2, and ask how they help you find work for your NVQ.
